Throgs Neck Bridge
Suspended Span Repairs
Project Description
The Throgs Neck Bridge is a six lane bridge over the East River that carries over 100,000 vehicles daily. The roadway deck rests on a system of transverse trusses framed into two longitudinal stiffening trusses. Steel repairs were performed from limited duration roadway closures and from a temporary shield/work platform hung below the truss system.
This project, consisting mainly of steel repairs, required the co-ordination of field measurements and real time design changes during fabrication and installation operations. The work consisted of staged repairs of floor trusses, stringers, tie plates, and beam replacements within the suspended portion of the bridge; temporary shoring and jacking; lead abatement and protective coating for steel repairs; new underdeck catwalk installation; removal and replacement of drainage troughs. The final repair count exceeded 3000 with each repair presenting its own idiosyncrasies and unique fabrication and installation considerations.
