Gowanus Expressway Rehabilitation

Prospect Expressway Interchange

Project Description

The Project consisted of the construction of a new 1300-foot one-lane widening of the existing mainline elevated viaduct; superstructure and deck replacement of an existing heavily used elevated bridge ramp; structural steel repairs; and replacement of over 270,000 square feet of elevated reinforced concrete highway deck while maintaining rush hour traffic and HOV lane operation.

During construction, the initial design of the highly travelled Prospect Expressway ramp to be replaced was found to be inadequate.  NYSDOT asked El Sol to propose a constructible solution, work in tandem with the designer to develop design drawings and fast track reconstruction of the ramp. The ramp was successfully designed, and construction was completed during a limited-time full closure of the ramp.

27,900 square feet of concrete deck replacement and several major structural steel erection operations were completed during multiple weekend-long closures.
